ABSTRACT
The discovery of topological insulators has created a revolution in condensed matter physics and materials science that has far ranging implications over coming decades. I will first introduce a simple way to understand the essential ideas of topological insulators: band inversion and symmetry protection. I will then generalize the ideas to experimentally feasible superconducting systems with time-reversal symmetry. When such a one-dimensional system becomes topological nontrivial, a Majorana Kramers pair appears on the boundary, producing tabletop supersymmetry, high critical temperature, quantized tunneling conductance plateaus, and unprecedented fractional Josephson effects. The latter effects have two significant implications: (i) the existence of a "periodic building” beyond Kitaev table unifying all the free-fermion topological systems and (ii) the realization of fractionalization in interacting superconductors.
Curriculum Vitae
Dr. Fan Zhang has been an Assistant Professor at the Physics Department of University of Texas at Dallas since 2014. He obtained his Ph. D. in Physics from University of Texas at Austin working on electronic correlations in few-layer graphene. During 2012-2014 he was a postdoctoral fellow at University of Pennsylvania studying topological insulators and superconductors.
Since 2010 Dr. Zhang has authored more than 30 publications with more than 1300 citations. He was awarded the 2013 Herbert B. Callen Memorial Prize, “for pioneering contributions to the theory of interfacial electronic states in topological insulators and topological superconductors.”
