College profile
The predecessor of the School of Physics was the Department of Physics of the University Department of Yan An Academy of Natural Sciences in 1940, and it was one of the four departments initially established by the Academy. In October 1950, the Physics Department of Sino-French university was merged. In 1961, the university set up the basic department and the physics department was merged. In 1984, the Department of Physics became independent and renamed the Department of Applied Physics. In June 2011, the School of Physics was officially established. The first dean was Academician of CAS Molin GE, a well-known physicist in China, and the current dean is Professor Yugui YAO. Through ten years of hard work, the comprehensive strength and international influence enter among the forefront of domestic universities, and some research directions have reached the international top level.
In 2012, the physics discipline entered the top 1% of the international academic evaluation system (ESI), which is the fourth discipline in the university to enter the top 1% of the ESI world ranking. In 2019, in the Shanghai Ranking, School of Physics entered the top 7% of universities in mainland China, ranking 13 in domestic universities. In 2020, the Applied Physics major was selected in the first batch of the "Strengthening Basic Disciplines Plan" of the Ministry of Education. In the same year it was rated as the "National First-Level Key Disciplines", and ranked fifth in the latest Shanghai Ranking in 2022. In 2022, it is ranked "251-300" around the world in the QS "Physics and Astronomy" discipline, ranking the 10th among domestic universities. In the same year, Physics was selected as the national "Double First-Class" construction discipline (only 10 in the country and the only university in the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology).
The school gathers famous teachers and talents
The school has 132 faculty members, including 108 full-time teachers, 59 professors/researchers and 50 associate professors/ researchers. There was 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 3 national-level excellent talents, 18 national-level young talents, 4 Beijing famous teachers, 8 Beijing famous teachers of Ideological and Political Education, 7 New Century Excellent Talents of the Ministry of Education, 5 Elsevier Highly Cited researchers, and 2 Clarivate Highly Cited researchers. There are 4 part-time or visiting professors such as Antti Niemi, academician of the Swedish and Finnish Academies. The high-level teaching team presents a steady development trend of echelon.
Outstanding scientific research achievements and advanced platform
The school now has the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education for "advanced optoelectronic quantum structure design and measurement" and the Beijing Key Laboratory for "Nano Photonics and Ultra Precision Optoelectronic systems"; Jointly build the national virtual simulation experiment teaching center "Engineering Optics Virtual Simulation Experiment Teaching Center" with the Institute of Optoelectronics; Participated in the construction of the Frontier Science Center of the Ministry of Education for "High Energy Matter", and joined the " International Center for Quantum Physics" with the Nobel Prize winner F. Wilczek as the core member (including Stockholm University, Uppsala University, Peking University and Beijing Institute of Technology).
The school has won one third award of National Natural Science, one second award of Natural Science of the Ministry of Education, one first award of National Defense Science and Technology, and many national 100 excellent doctoral dissertations and other provincial and ministerial awards. In 2018, it won one second prize of National Natural Science. In recent years, the school has published 50 papers in the journals of Nature, PRL, PNAs, and other Nature and Science family journals. The school has presided over and undertaken more than 100 national projects such as the National Major Research Project, the National Key Research and Development Project, the National Major Instrument Project and the National Natural Science Foundation (including outstanding youth projects, key projects, major projects and general projects), with an average annual scientific research fund of more than 20 million.
