Quantum networks are critical for many applications of quantum information processing. Unfortunately, transmission loss is inevitable for the construction of quantum networks. To address this issue, quantum repeaters have been proposed. However, current repeater protocols that rely on quantum memory are still facing challenges. Here, we introduce a new device called the entanglement buffer, which can outperform quantum memory. We have designed two caching protocols that can fill entanglement buffers with either one Bell state or a stream of Bell states. Our results demonstrate that entanglement buffers can be robust against imperfect implementations and transmission loss, making them superior to quantum memory for the quantum repeater protocol. Furthermore, larger entanglement buffers provide greater advantages, and our caching protocols are immune to time synchronization issues.
